Frequently Asked Questions
What does "pre-scored" mean, and how is this different from a mosaic sheet?
Rather than lots of tiny loose pieces on mesh, this is a single large-format 452 x 452mm porcelain tile with the chequer pattern and grout lines pre-marked into its surface. You lay it like a normal floor tile, but get the look of a mosaic with far fewer grout lines to keep clean.
How many tiles will I need to cover a square metre?
Each tile covers just over 0.2m², so you'll need roughly 5 tiles per square metre. As with any patterned floor, we'd suggest ordering an extra 10% to allow for cuts and matching at the edges.
How slip-resistant is this tile?
It's rated for anti-slip performance (R11 / PTV36+), making it a sound choice for hallways, kitchens, bathrooms and other areas where underfoot grip matters.
Can it be used outdoors, for example on a porch or patio?
Yes, this porcelain tile is suitable for interior and exterior use, so it works equally well as a period-style porch or patio floor as it does inside the home.
What material is it made from?
Porcelain — dense, low-absorption and highly resistant to scratching, staining and frost damage, which is what makes it suitable for both indoor floors and sheltered outdoor areas.
Can I frame this chequer tile with a border and corner piece?
Yes. The Bristol Black & White Border and Corner anti-slip tiles are designed as companion pieces, so you can edge a chequered floor area for a complete, classic Victorian look.
How do I install and maintain it?
Fix with a standard flexible tile adhesive suited to large-format porcelain, and grout in a shade that complements the pattern — a mid-grey is a popular, low-maintenance choice. Once grouted, sweeping and an occasional wash with warm water and a mild cleaner is all it needs; no sealing is required.
